Tik Tok Mix

Parodies of popular songs are becoming extremely common. People like to watch videos that they're familiar with, but they are also funny as well. The effort put into making a parody varies from person to person. Some people go to extreme measures to make a parody that is enjoyable.

Watch this Video!!!!

The parody of Ke$ha's song, Tik Tok, involved a lot of work to make it funny and still keep similarities between the original video as well. Parodies are usually made to make fun of the video or to just give the audience a laugh. Here I think is just one to be funny and that they're not trying to make fun of the song. This song pulls the audience in since the real song was so popular and this one is funny it makes you want to continue to listen to see what will be said next.

Is "whipping your hair back and forth" really an act of plagiarism?

In the popular youtube video, "Whip My Hair Back and Forth," not the original, but one made by the youtube star BeenerKeeKee19952, the song "Whip My Hair Back and Forth" is shown in a completely new light. The song, originally sang by Willow Smith is reenacted, and lip sync by the boy on youtube.
At the beginning of this video, he states that he doesn't want people to "steal" his video and post it on their pages, because it is "not nice." However, nothing about this video is actually HIS OWN. He is breaking copyright law because nowhere throughout the video does it say he got permission from Willow Smith's record company, and also nowhere in the song does it say something about Willow Smith.
Youtube has many videos like this one, that break copyright laws. Because of how easy it is to get famous off of someone else's words, copyright law is slowly going down the drain. People have no morals and do not care about other people anymore. They only want to benefit themselves, which is what most youtube stars are doing.

Copyright infringement has become more and more popular throughout the growing Youtube world. It is easy to access other people's ideas and make them "your own."

Fair trade, is it fair?

In our groups opinion, Fair trade is a good solution to the unfair labor practices in third world countries. The people in third world countries were so neglected and poor BEFORE they were employed by sweat shops, and they thought that their pay and their conditions were good to begin with. In the Fair trade movement, they were given more than they believed they needed, but to us, an americanized society, is not even enough to survive in our world.

Before this class, our group had never really thought about where our clothes came from. According to all four of us, our clothes came from the store and that was the end of the chain. All of us shop at the mall. Malls make it easy to believe that clothes are made in a huge factory in America and shipped to all of the stores. We never really thought that they came from different countries.

After we were given this assignment, we sat down to talk about what we were going to write about, and what our stance was on the entire issue. Nikki stated, "I don't care where my clothes came from, honestly." But then we all started discussing where our clothes were actually made and what people, mostly children, went through to give us our name-brand expensive clothing that we have the privilege to wear every day.

The use of sweat shops is a complex issue. It is arguable that sweat shops are saving children. This idea says that without the small amount of money each person makes in a sweat shop, children will be starving. Without sweat shops many women and children will lose their jobs; therefore, causing an even greater issue. While our group acknowledges that sweat shops are unfair and hard on workers, they still provide a small amount of money that may feed a family for a week. This makes the issue of sweat shops complicated. You cannot say sweat shops are bad and we need to get rid of them if you do not allow for a way to supply jobs to all of the people that work in these factories.

Our group was surprised to find that these factories are not only located in many third world countries, but also in the United States itself. We learned that sweat shops are also located in California. While it can be easier to ignore problems that are on the other side of the world, something that is happening in the United States hits home and his much harder to ignore. The people in California earn meager amounts of money making things that they could not afford to purchase at their local mall. One of our favorite stores, Forever 21, is notorious for abusing workers rights and buying cheaply made clothes.

Invisible Knapsacks

There are many "invisible knapsacks" that give specific groups of people different privileges. The McIntosh piece demonstrated "white privilege." In her piece she listed reasons that show how Caucasian people are privileged. These reasons make up an "indivisible knapsack." Another issue that has it's own set of privileges is religion. Some examples of Christian privilege in the United States may include:

1. Most state and federal holidays coincide with Christian beliefs; therefore, not affecting one's work or education.
2. An individual can speak openly about his/her religious beliefs without concern of other people's reactions.
3. A Christian may have a better chance of being elected into political office.
4. One may assume that "Merry Christmas" is a proper holiday greeting over "Happy Holidays."
5. Parents have the opportunity to send their children to parochial schools and children are less likely to be criticized for their beliefs.

The Iowa State Daily reported that 75% of Americans identify themselves as Protestant or Catholic, while the remaining people identified themselves as unaffiliated. Although the unaffiliated group is obviously a minority it is constantly increasing in numbers. The United States is known for being diverse, also being referred to as "the melting pot." The privilege of being a Christian is commonly forgotten, but without the acknowledgement of the issue it will never be solved. In McIntosh's piece she stated that most people are oblivious of the white privilege and then unwilling to change the situation because of a power issue. In her piece she spoke about males versus females saying that a male would acknowledge that he was dominant, but then unwilling to relinquish the privileges that being a man may provide. The Christian Privilege is similar to both conflicts in these ways.

Facebook and its effect on Culture

Facebook is becoming the most popular website in the entire world, almost everybody has a facebook, "their are more than 500 million users, In February of 2010, it reached over 400 million users, but by July their were 500 million users" (facebook). "People spend over 700 billion minutes/month on facebook" (facebook). Facebook started as a simple networking site for college students, it is still that today, but has also turned into so much more. People broadcast their entire lives over facebook.
Their are so many different things to do on facebook to get in touch with people. You can message, write on their wall, and even "poke" people. A very popular thing among college age kids is to "facebook creep!" Creeping usually happens when you find out somebody's name that you would like to know about, but that you don't want them to know. Creeping is going to their site and basically scanning over all of their pictures and info, without ever adding them.

Now you can play games on facebook, some of the games even cost money to play! Not only are their iTunes cards to buy, there are now facebook cards to buy for points on games. That Is Pathetic.
You can even publish whether you are single, it's complicated, in a relationship, engaged, married or even divorced. A relationship isn't considered "official" until it's on facebook. To facebook users this is a major step in the relationship. It automatically links your profiles together for people to see.
In today's culture college students use facebook as a tool to connect to friends.

According to our group, life would suck without facebook..
